The Safe Families Initiative
Supporting Families. Strengthening Communities. Transforming Generations.
Healing doesn't happen in isolation. Families heal when children and caregivers have the tools to heal together.
A Family-Centered Path Toward Healing
The Safe Families Initiative from Promises Connected Family Treatment is a trauma-informed, family-centered program designed to strengthen youth and caregivers impacted by trauma, chronic stress, substance use, emotional and behavioral challenges, and family disruption.
Instead of focusing only on a child's behavior or only on a caregiver's response, Safe Families works across the family system.
Through structured, evidence-based and evidence-informed programming, adolescents develop skills for emotional regulation, coping, relationships, and recovery — while caregivers strengthen their ability to understand trauma, support their teen, communicate effectively, establish healthy boundaries, and create greater safety and connection within the family.
One family. Two generations. A connected path toward healing.
Why Safe Families?
Because what affects a child affects the family.
Trauma, chronic stress, and substance use can change the way young people think, feel, behave, communicate, and connect with others. They can also affect the entire family.
Caregivers often ask:
- Why is my teen so angry?
- Why won't they talk to me?
- Why do the same behaviors keep happening?
- How do I set boundaries without pushing them further away?
- How do I support my child when I am struggling too?
Safe Families creates space to address both sides of that relationship. Youth learn skills to better understand and manage what they are experiencing. Caregivers develop tools to respond with greater understanding, consistency, connection, and confidence. And families have an opportunity to begin creating healthier patterns together.
Four Pathways. One Family-Centered Approach.
The Safe Families Initiative combines four complementary programs addressing the needs of adolescents and their caregivers.
Safe Paths
Helping Teens Navigate Trauma & Chronic Stress
Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS) supports adolescents and young adults ages 12–21 who have experienced trauma and ongoing or chronic stress. Rather than requiring youth to begin by discussing every detail of what has happened to them, SPARCS focuses on helping them develop practical skills they can use in their everyday lives.
- Recognize thoughts, feelings, and body responses
- Strengthen emotional regulation
- Develop healthier coping strategies
- Improve communication and strengthen relationships
- Make more intentional choices during stressful situations
Safe Paths Recovery
Building Safety From Trauma & Substance Use
Trauma and substance use can become deeply connected. For some young people, substances or other risky behaviors become ways of escaping painful emotions, memories, stress, or situations they do not yet know how to manage. Safe Paths Recovery uses Seeking Safety principles to help adolescents understand the relationship between trauma, emotions, stress, coping, and substance use.
- Understand connections between trauma and substance use
- Develop healthier ways to cope
- Strengthen emotional regulation and decision-making
- Build healthier relationships
- Strengthen recovery-supportive choices
Safe Foundations
Seeking Safety for Parents & Caregivers
When a young person struggles with trauma or substance use, caregivers are affected too. Parents may experience fear, anger, guilt, confusion, exhaustion, grief, or uncertainty about how to help. Safe Foundations provides caregivers with a supportive environment to better understand the relationship between trauma, stress, substance use, coping, and relationships.
- Understand the connection between trauma, stress, and substance use
- Develop healthier coping strategies and self-care
- Establish healthier boundaries
- Improve relationship skills and emotional awareness
- Support safety and recovery within the family
Attuned Parenting Program
Powered by Triple P — Positive Parenting Program
Adolescence changes the parent-child relationship. Teens need increasing independence while still needing connection, guidance, boundaries, and emotional safety. The Attuned Parenting Program helps caregivers strengthen their relationship with their teen while developing practical parenting strategies.
- Strengthen communication and build connection and trust
- Establish clear boundaries and realistic expectations
- Respond more effectively to behavior
- Support growing independence
- Strengthen the parent-teen relationship
The Safe Families Proposition
How the Programs Work Together
While Youth Learn to Regulate, Caregivers Learn to Respond.
That is one of the most important differences in the Safe Families Initiative. Instead of changing only one side of the relationship, we begin creating opportunities for the family pattern itself to change.
The Teen Recognizes
"I'm getting overwhelmed."
The Caregiver Recognizes
"This may be dysregulation — not simply disrespect."
Safe Families + TAPE Repair™
Understanding What's Beneath the Pattern
The Safe Families Initiative naturally aligns with the Promises Connected TAPE Repair™ Framework.
Trauma
What happened?
We help families understand how trauma and chronic stress may influence emotions, coping, behavior, relationships, and substance use.
Attachment
What happened to connection?
We help caregivers and youth strengthen communication, trust, emotional safety, and relationships.
Patterns
What keeps repeating?
Families begin identifying cycles involving conflict, emotional reactivity, avoidance, unhealthy coping, substance use, boundaries, and communication.
Emotional Integrity
What can we do differently?
Youth and caregivers develop greater emotional awareness, regulation, coping, communication, boundaries, accountability, and intentional decision-making.
Understand the story. Recognize the pattern. Strengthen the connection. Create something different.

A Resource for DSS & Community Partners
Helping Strengthen the Families You Serve
Safe Families can provide an important resource for professionals working with families in which trauma, chronic stress, substance use, parenting challenges, and adolescent behavioral health needs overlap.
When the Case Plan Says "Parenting," We Want to Go Deeper. Parenting challenges do not always result from a lack of parenting knowledge. Sometimes trauma is involved. Sometimes chronic stress is involved. Sometimes a caregiver's own history influences how they respond to their teen. Safe Families gives DSS and other family-serving professionals access to programming that addresses these interconnected needs.
